Why Malaysian Culture? (Personal Interest)

I was born in the quiet and easy-going city of Kota Kinabalu, the capital of Sabah on the island of Borneo, Malaysia. Since I was a little kid, I grew up surrounded by people of different ethnicity backgrounds. I always thought to myself how lucky I am to be born and raised in a place that is rich in diversity and multiracial. Against this colourful and vibrant background, my experiences are bountiful and priceless.
This then comes to the big question.
Why write a blog about the various cultures present in Malaysia?
Every country around the world has their own unique and variety of culture present. Be it the language, the local food or the places of interest to visit. It is almost impossible to have a great knowledge on all of them! You can visit a country multiple times and enjoy the local food, visit the tourist attractions and pick up some of the local languages used along the way. However, there will always be places and food that you might have missed along the way as they are only known to the locals.
When I am travelling or visiting new places, I do like getting recommendations and insights given by the locals. Yes, obtaining information from websites such as tourist or tour websites on the various places to visit and food to try are quite useful but it is always interesting and informative to get a fresh perspective now and then from local citizens as they tend to know more then they let on. There was a conversation I had with a friend a few years back that I found to be quite funny. I was planning to visit Penang which is a state in Malaysia with a couple of friends. When I asked him (a local) where the best places to get good food are, all he said was this “Go to the oldest and dirtiest looking coffee shops. The overly decorated and clean coffee shops cater mainly to tourists and the food are not that tasty at all.”. You certainly will not get this type of recommendation from tourist websites or information centres at all!
So yes, I wish to share my experiences and insights on Malaysia with all of you readers. Still reading this? Awesome! For those who are interested in visiting Malaysia, you will be able to get some tips and useful information from my blog. As for the curious, I hope my blog will help you learn a bit more about Malaysia and may prompt you to visit sometime!
